Every flight over the Blue Lagoon starts on the same mountain. Babadağ rises almost straight out of the sea to nearly 2,000 metres, and that unusual geometry of great height right on the coast, with reliable winds, is what turned Ölüdeniz into one of the world's best-known paragliding destinations. Here is what to know about the mountain itself.
The launch levels
Paragliding launches sit in the 1,700–1,900 m band, facing different directions. That spread matters: whatever direction the wind blows from on a given day, there is usually a launch facing it, which is one reason the flying season here is so long. Your pilot, not you, picks the launch for the day.
The cable car
A cable car runs from the Ölüdeniz side up to the mountain's upper stations, and it is not only for pilots and passengers: visitors ride up for the viewing terraces and the café at the top, where the lagoon, Butterfly Valley and the coastline sit in a single frame. Timetables and tickets belong to the cable car operator and change with the season, so check locally for current details. On top: cooler than you expect
At 1,700 metres and above, the air is noticeably cooler than the beach, even in mid-summer. Bring a light top layer, wear closed shoes, and expect the wind that makes the flying possible. Watching tandems launch from the edge is worth the trip on its own, and it has talked many hesitant visitors into flying.
